Family History Library Computer Upgrade May 31, 2006

I decided that there was something I could do for the Family History library.  They have a room full of outdated and otherwise antique computers.  In spite of that, they have a Win2000 server that holds a goodly amount of CD’s.  The purpose is to avoid having to change CD’s all the time when using some of the programs.  The server is a decent piece of equipment, but the client computers (with one exception) are all P2-400’s or less, not really capable of running anything better than Win98.

They did get 3 computers from Salt Lake, but with wiped drives.  However, they have a WinXP license sticker on them.  That makes a WinXP install legal.  I brought them home and have 2 of them all loaded up and ready to configure and use.  I have another computer, an Athlon 750, that is all built up and ready for use as well.  So, with these, that makes 5 good computers, and there are two others that may be usable.  A person I know is going to see about getting her company to donate a few more.  Maybe we can have a room full of decent equipment.  I think that would make the library a lot more attractive for people to use.

I also have some print servers left over from years ago.  They work just fine, so I think I will let them have those and put their printers on the network to simplify printing.  Hopefully, we can have all of this up and running in a couple of weeks.

Once again, it seems to have been a while since I have posted anything.  Part of it is because I have just not felt good at all the past week.  I got a cold and just can not seem to get rid of it.  I came home from church early today and slept for a few hours.  The only reason I went in the first place was because Joyce was out of town and I told her that I would play the organ for her.  I don’t know that I feel any better now than earlier.  Kind of in a fog, I guess.

Memorial Day Weekend May 28, 2006

Well, you can tell it’s memorial day weekend because of the rain. Funny how a week ago it was hot then it’s cool and rainy. It rained 0.95 inches yesterday in about 4 hours. Thunderstorm went right over us and it poured down. At the front of the house where I had a gutter put on, most of the front roof converges on an area about 8 feet wide. The water was coming out of the downspout in a stream almost the size of it. Pretty amazing. At least I don’t have to water the yard for a few days.

Food storage spaghetti May 18, 2006

We had spaghetti for supper tonight.  I decided to try out a can of the ground beef that I got from the cannery.  I noticed that there was a good portion of fat in the can, but rinsing the beef off under hot water pretty well took care of it.  I used a can of Del Monte sauce, tomato and basil flavor.  Added 3 tbsp splenda (or sugar), 4 oz of sliced mushrooms, 4 green onions, and a tablespoon of ground parmesan cheese.  Mmmm good.  I will have to get more of this flavor sauce.

This is very much a food storage meal.  You may not have fresh mushrooms, but a can of mushrooms will work well, and you can always rehydrate some dried onions if wanted.  You can use traditional spaghetti noodles, or any other pasta that you have.  This meal made enough to feed 4 people very easily.

I took it quite easy today because my hips are so sore.  I did get the grass cut this morning, but it took me about 2 hours.  I went pretty slow but ran over the yard twice because the first time did not come out real good.  I figure I cut about 4 inches off the back yard.  That’s a lot for a week.  The front wasn’t so bad, though, maybe 2 inches.  It came out real nice.

I get to go down for another back massage tomorrow afternoon.  I had one Tuesday evening because my back was hurting real bad.  Khammay has me lay on my stomach on the floor, then uses her feet and heels.  She actually ended up walking on me trying to get the muscles to relax.  My upper back on the left side was real bad as well.  For a while I thought she was trying to push me through the floor.  She worries about hurting me, but I always tell her if it’s too much I will say something.  We were almost at that point.  Right now, my back does not hurt.  It is just the hips.  I don’t know if there is anything that can be done about that, but I will ask tomorrow.

92 and humid today. Overcast with rain and/or thunderstorms in the forecast. I’ve seen it raining in the mountains, but so far nothing here in the valley. Overall, it’s quite a miserable day outside.

Computer upgrade…it’s just for the kids. May 17, 2006

I was down at the geek store on Overland Road last week and they had a special on a motherboard, Athlon 3100+ and 512MB RAM for $179.  The board is made by PC Chips, never heard of the memory brand before, but what the heck.  I also got a 160 GB hard drive for $100 and a new 350 watt PS for $45.  For less than 350 bucks, the kids got a new computer that really screams.  It puts the old Athlon 750 (anyone else ever use a slot A before?) to shame.  It ought to work a lot better.  Now if I can just keep the kids from loading a bunch of junk on it….

It’s about 95 degrees outside, there are thunderheads scattered around the valley, and it is a little humid, but not too bad.  In spite of this, I am actually enjoying the warm weather.  I’m not going to go out and cut the grass in it though.  I’ll enjoy it from a restful standpoint!

Speaking of temperature, the air conditioner kept the house right at 74 degrees until later this afternoon.  It’s holding right now at 76.  I purchased a couple of attic fans that I need to install.  If the attic wasn’t 140 degrees the house might actually stay at 74.  Something to do over the next few days.  The cooler in the computer room is doing nicely, except that it seems to have a vibration in it that makes it real noisy.  I may have to open it up and see what’s rattling.  That or take it back and get a different one.

So, in spite of the heat, we are doing well.  It would be real cool to have a good loud thunderstorm go over.  I love those.

My goodness, where does time go? It has been forever since I have updated this thing. One problem is that I sometimes don’t seem to have much to write about, or I think that something I would like to write about is not interesting. This is probably a bad way to look at this blog thing. So, I will work at trying be better at keeping this going.
