Wow, it seems like this week has just flown by and I haven’t done anything with this blog at all!  So, here I sit this Sunday morning with a little time on my hands, and I will catch up some.

Ashley’s class (with one other first grade class) had a field trip to a fish hatchery on Thursday.  I volunteered to go with them, but did not take the bus with the kids.  Buses are bad for my back.  This hatchery did not seem to be as sophisticated as the ones on Oregon we used to visit, but they still grow nearly 3 million fish each year.  They had everything from eggs (400,000 at the time) to fish that are going to be taken to lakes this weekend.  After the tour, there was a series of ponds with a bunch of trails around them that the kids got to explore.  It was fun.  Then I went home and worked in the yard for a couple of hours.  Got almost everything trimmed and weeded.

I had another job interview on Friday afternoon.  This was for an auto auction company.  It sounds like it would be a fun job, but I think I would rather work for the Idaho Finance company.  I left home with the intention of stopping at Costco along the way and getting gas, but the traffic in town was so bad, I didn’t have time.  So, the needle is almost on E all the way there.  There was a Chevron right there, so I stopped and put $5 in it.  I figured that would get me back to town.  $2.58 per gallon.  I got back to Costco (they now have 16 pumps) and the line was about 25 cars deep.  Yuck!  Karen and I had a date evening in the area, so I went back later and there was no line.  $2.36 per gallon.  Saved $3 over filling at Chevron.

Saturday was the ward service project day.  We had a list of people who had signed up to have some things done around their houses, like tilling garden areas, removing stumps, trimming hedges, and so on.  We had about 18 people who had things to do and about 20 people who were helping out.  It worked out pretty good.  Took about 4 hours to get everything done.  It was good to help out.

Today is Sunday, and we will be going to church in a while.  We will have choir practice today here (it will be nice to get back into that routine).  I don’t know if Sean and I will go home teaching or not.  I saw him yesterday, but I did not think to ask him about it.

So, that should catch up on the usual stuff.  I will be coming up with some other stuff as the day goes on, I’m sure.

Cover your ears! John’s singing! April 14, 2006

Because the choir is singing two numbers in church for Easter Sunday, we had an additional practice last evening at the church.  There were only 10 of us there, but I think the songs are going to turn out real good.  We had to keep the piano closed, though, because Renee (she’s our pianist for choir) can easily overpower the few voices.

We finished about 7:40, but Renee and I spent another 45 minutes just looking at music.  I do not have much of a solo voice at all.  I really prefer singing bass.  I’ve been stuck with tenor, though, because Paul, Doug and Andy are very strong basses and all choirs seem to need more tenors than basses.  Anyway, Renee was playing some pieces that she has and I was singing and, surprisingly, it sounded pretty good.  She has a few duet pieces as well that would be great with a male lead and female second.  Before we knew it, 45 minutes was gone.  It is real easy to lose track of time when you’re having fun!

Pres. Hinckley April 2, 2006

I had a couple of thoughts regarding President Hinckley while watching this weekend’s conference sessions.  While he spoke last evening, I thought that he looked old and tired.  Of course, he probably is, considering that he is almost 96 years old.  This morning, when he spoke, he looked better, but made mention of the fact that he is in the sunset of his life.  He reflected on his 48 years of being a general authority of the church.  He quoted from parts of his journal from 1953, when he was a member of a stake presidency and often had meetings with members of the quorum of the twelve.  His life has been busy and full.  I fear he will soon leave us.

Temple trip April 1, 2006

The ward had a youth temple trip last evening for baptisms.  Since Crystal was able to go (being 12 now), Karen and I wanted to go also.  It worked out well that Ashley was staying at a friend’s house overnight.  We had 14 youth along with 10 adults that went.  I was asked to be one of the baptizers, along with another man, Brett.  We each had 7 young people to baptize; 15 deceased people for each young man or woman.  Altogether, 210 names were done.  It was a real neat experience.  Being quite busy baptizing and not just sitting and thinking, I can’t say that I felt any particular or special spirit, however, the feeling of being in the temple is quite powerful and fulfilling itself, and that was sufficient for the evening.

Actually, in retrospect, many of the names were Spanish or German, and somehow, I did not have any trouble with pronouncing any of them.  Foreign language and names are not a usual skill of mine.
