Family History Library Computer Upgrade May 31, 2006

I decided that there was something I could do for the Family History library. They have a room full of outdated and otherwise antique computers. In spite of that, they have a Win2000 server that holds a goodly amount of CD’s. The purpose is to avoid having to change CD’s all the time when using some of the programs. The server is a decent piece of equipment, but the client computers (with one exception) are all P2-400’s or less, not really capable of running anything better than Win98.
They did get 3 computers from Salt Lake, but with wiped drives. However, they have a WinXP license sticker on them. That makes a WinXP install legal. I brought them home and have 2 of them all loaded up and ready to configure and use. I have another computer, an Athlon 750, that is all built up and ready for use as well. So, with these, that makes 5 good computers, and there are two others that may be usable. A person I know is going to see about getting her company to donate a few more. Maybe we can have a room full of decent equipment. I think that would make the library a lot more attractive for people to use.
I also have some print servers left over from years ago. They work just fine, so I think I will let them have those and put their printers on the network to simplify printing. Hopefully, we can have all of this up and running in a couple of weeks.
